"Much Ado About Something" by C. E. Lawrence is an imaginative fantasy that uses fairy magic to examine the differences between the enchanting realm of Fairyland and the grim conditions of early 20th-century London. The story centers on June, a compassionate fairy, and a gnome named Bim, who feels called to ease the suffering of London's downtrodden, especially a young girl named Sally Wilkins. Beginning in Fairyland, at a celebration of Mayday for June, all are full of magic and glee. Everything begins to change as London's bleak shadow casts a dark gloom over June's spirit. Risking the wrath of Oberon, the fairy king, June journeys into London's grim Paradise Court, where she encounters a reality of poverty and despair and is now determined to bring hope and assistance to those in need.
