"The Black Fawn" by Jim Kjelgaard is a story about a boy named Bud Sloan, who comes to live with Gramps and Gram Bennett on their farm after living in an orphanage. Bud is nervous when he leaves, but the couple shows him kindness, even though he is slow to accept it. As Bud settles into his new life on the farm, he learns from Gramps, builds bonds with the farm animals, and begins to open up. His attachment to a black fawn he finds in the woods shows his longing for friendship and a place to belong, in a world that doesn't always feel safe.
