Summary

"Scottish Sketches" by Amelia E. Barr is a series of tales that occur in Scotland, mostly centering on people linked to the Crawford family, like Alexander Crawford and his son, Colin, as they deal with life and its problems. The beginning shows Alexander Crawford, thinking about his riches and family history while waiting for his son, Colin, to come home from Glasgow. As the stories advance, we see Crawford's pride in his property and his strong Scottish loyalty, along with his worries about Colin possibly liking someone English, setting up a conflict between father and son and highlighting the conflict between what someone wants for themselves and what they're supposed to do, since Colin has dreams that might not match what his father expects, suggesting deeper examinations of family relationships and what it means to be Scottish.
