Summary

"The Acharnians" by Aristophanes is a funny play from ancient Greece that talks about what happens because of the Peloponnesian War, particularly concentrating on farmers' struggles. Using jokes and smart talk, Aristophanes looks at the idea of peace versus war and shows how an Athenian person feels when they're exhausted from all the fighting. The main character, Dicaeopolis, is fed up with the never-ending war wrecking his land, so he makes his own peace deal with the Spartans to protect his family. Along the way, he meets all sorts of interesting people who have contrasting perspectives on war and peace. Dicaeopolis manages to create his own peaceful space, which is different from most of the other Athenians who still like the idea of fighting. The play is full of humor, comments on politics, and a vivid picture of Athenian society, so Aristophanes can criticize the war and the people who keep it going.

About the Author

Aristophanes was an Ancient Greek comic playwright from Athens and a poet of Old Attic Comedy. He wrote in total forty plays, of which eleven survive virtually complete today. These provide the most valuable examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy and are used to define it, along with fragments from dozens of lost plays by Aristophanes and his contemporaries.
