The story follows the powerful city of Athens as it grows and faces conflicts with Sparta, showing the tricky political situation and human behavior of the time. Starting with Athens' recovery after the Persian wars, the book highlights how its growing strength led to tension and war with other city-states. The book examines the important choices made by leaders such as Themistocles and Pericles and shows the unstable alliances among the Greek city-states. Readers will discover how rising tensions and key events, like the siege of Plataea and naval battles, sparked a war focused on who would control Greece.

About the Author

Thucydides was an Athenian historian and general. His History of the Peloponnesian War recounts the fifth-century BC war between Sparta and Athens until the year 411 BC. Thucydides has been dubbed the father of "scientific history" by those who accept his claims to have applied strict standards of impartiality and evidence-gathering and analysis of cause and effect, without reference to intervention by the gods, as outlined in his introduction to his work.
