As our travelers settle into the town of Vévey, they meet Jean Descloux, a boatman whose knowledge of the land is matched by his insights into politics and human nature, leading to deep talks on governance, festival, and actions. When rumors swirl about a mysterious headsman, the story weaves together personal stories and social tensions, revealing the hidden face of what the characters experience, as individual lives get caught up in the turning gears of power.
