Summary

"My Pretty Maid; or, Liane Lester" by Alex. McVeigh Miller is a 19th-century romance that introduces Liane Lester, a mistreated young woman trapped in poverty with a spiteful grandmother, as she navigates love and society alongside the wealthy Jesse Devereaux and heiress Roma Clarke. Liane’s life as an overworked yet beautiful seamstress is transformed when Jesse, through mistaken identity, saves her from unwanted attention, sparking a hidden love amidst the stark contrast between her simple life and Roma’s privileged world. As Liane grapples with her feelings for Jesse and the burden of her abusive home life, the novel explores themes of class disparity, love, and the resilience required of women in a difficult era, setting the scene for a dramatic tale of struggle and aspiration.
