"DP" by Arthur Dekker Savage is a science fiction story that paints a picture of a future society obsessed with comfort, but starved of real purpose. Allen Kinderwood, a young man suffocating in this world of endless pleasure, seeks a way out by applying for a "Departure Permit." His journey takes a turn when he meets Nedda Marsh, a woman living under constant "protection." Through their complicated relationship and a violent clash with Nedda's protector, Allen starts to question the nature of freedom and the cost of their seemingly perfect society. The story builds to a powerful moment where Allen must decide if the ease and safety of this controlled world are worth sacrificing a life of meaning, highlighting the human need for purpose, even when comfort is guaranteed.
