Summary

"Modern Painting" by George Moore is a critical exploration of the changing art world, particularly the painting trends of the late 1800s. Moore looks closely at important artists and what shaped their work, especially focusing on James Whistler and others like him. The book shows Moore's insightful views on what makes art beautiful and the shifts in how people thought about art during that time. At the beginning, Moore considers his long fascination with the mysterious James Whistler, pointing out the complicated nature of Whistler's personality and artistic ideas. Moore tries to explain Whistler’s methods by comparing them to older ways of creating art. He also compares Whistler's stylish night scenes and portraits to those of other well-known artists, offering a wider view of what modern art meant at the time. The beginning has a thoughtful feel, suggesting that the book will look at individual artists as well as how art affects society and culture.
