Summary

"Modern Painting, Its Tendency and Meaning" by Willard Huntington Wright, is an exploration of painting's development, aiming to foster a richer grasp of what makes art valuable and meaningful. It looks at how art styles shifted over time, from old to new, and questions common false ideas about modern art trends. The book kicks off by pointing out the confusion around modern painting and stresses that we need a way to properly judge it. Wright says that to truly appreciate art, we must see a painting's true qualities using our minds, not just making quick decisions based on what we like or what story it tells. He believes the most important part of great art is a strong emotional reaction and seeks to understand what drives and affects modern painters, seeing modern art as a step forward from older ways of doing things, but with new techniques and viewpoints.

Wright was active in avant-garde cultural circles in pre-World War I New York, and under the pseudonym he created the fictional detective Philo Vance, a sleuth and aesthete who first appeared in books in the 1920s, then in films and on the radio.
