Summary

"The Crucible" by Mark Lee Luther is a story about Jean Fanshaw, a defiant young woman, who is sent to a refuge for girls after butting heads with her family. The story looks closely at gender, what society expects, and being free, all while Jean struggles with what she wants and how annoyed she feels in a place that holds her back. Jean kicks things off by going against the rules; she wants to be called "Jack" and refuses to act how women are "supposed to". Through her talks with Miss Blair and remembering problems with her family, we see that Jean is not like other women but, how she ended up at the refuge. The start of the book creates lots of feelings and shows that Jean is going to discover who she is and fight against what others want her to be.
