Summary

"By Right of Purchase" by Harold Bindloss is a story set in the early 1900s about Charley Leland, a Canadian farmer, getting involved with the wealthy Denham family in England. The book looks at topics like social status and doing what's right in a changing world, mainly through Leland's relationship with Carrie Denham. Carrie is stuck between what her family wants for her future and what she wants for herself; she is burdened by a sense of obligation and feels trapped by the expectations placed upon her. Leland, while at the Denham's estate in England, sees that the family is in a tough spot financially and seems determined to help them, especially Carrie, maybe because he likes her. Because of this, the beginning of the book hints at some tough choices Carrie will have to make.
