Summary

"Bunyan" by James Anthony Froude is a 19th-century retelling of the story and life of John Bunyan, the man who penned "The Pilgrim's Progress". Froude paints a picture of Bunyan's hard life, starting with his beginnings in 1628, as a boy from a poor family during a time of big political drama in England. The book tells about Bunyan's early troublemaking ways and his fight to be good, something made harder by bad dreams and a strong sense of wrong-doing. Although he didn't get much education, his life was soaked in strong religious beliefs, which stirred up a storm inside him. This battle between doing wrong and wanting to be good leads him to become a minister, setting the scene for how he would later write his famous book.

About the Author

James Anthony Froude was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best-known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.
