Summary

"Caesar: A Sketch" by James Anthony Froude is a historical exploration, offering insights into the world of Julius Caesar and the transformation of the Roman Republic. It shows the intricate political plays and moral decline of Roman society that made way for Caesar's dominance. The book looks into the background of Rome, noting how its citizens once were good at self-government, but then became corrupt. This sets the stage to understand how the free republic eventually turned into a government ruled by one person, Caesar. While admitting the limits of available historical records, the author utilizes the historical resources available at the time of writing to build a sketch of Caesar's life and times, emphasizing the significance of his leadership amid Rome's shift from republic to empire.

About the Author

James Anthony Froude was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best-known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.
