Summary

"The First Distiller" by Leo Tolstoy is a six-act comedy that explores the dark side of temptation and the foolish choices people make, especially when it comes to alcohol. The story takes place in a farming village where a simple, decent man is tricked by a strange worker – who’s really a demon – into making liquor from his crops. At first, he's a good person, but the booze turns him into a selfish drunk, causing trouble with his family and the community leaders. The demon uses the drink to twist everyone in the village, turning them from helpful neighbors into a wild, greedy mob. The play is a warning about what happens when people go overboard and how it can wreck a community's values.
