Summary

"The Son of My Friend" by T. S. Arthur is a cautionary story set in the 1800's about the risks tied to drinking and its severe effects on people and their loved ones. The story follows a woman named Agnes, who organizes a party where alcohol is served, even though her husband is worried about what might happen. A young war veteran, Albert Martindale, is the guest of honor and unfortunately gives in to drinking, which leads to really bad outcomes. The party, meant to be a happy occasion, turns into a dangerous place, where Albert's poor choices take control of his life unexpectedly. Agnes's decision to have alcohol at the party results in Albert's tragic death; he drinks, becomes confused, and sadly drowns accidentally. In the book, the author shows just how important it is to be responsible and how drinking in social situations can have terrible consequences from what looks like a harmless decision.
