Summary

"Henry Smeaton: A Jacobite Story of the Reign of George the First" by G. P. R. James is a historical fiction that unfolds in England during the Jacobite uprisings of the early 1700s, where young Henry Smeaton finds himself at the heart of political conspiracies. The story starts near St. James's Square, introducing Henry in a conversation with Van Noost, as they discuss the unsteady political climate, including recent impeachments and the shifting public sentiment. Their talk transitions into the nature of power and allegiance, particularly toward Lord Oxford and Jacobite beliefs. The narrative expands to show vibrant London as a backdrop to Henry's personal and political motives. The initial segments of the narrative create an aura of mystery, hinting at the difficult choices and political quagmire Henry will soon encounter.
