Summary

"On the Ruin of Britain" by Gildas is a tale from long ago that describes Britain's fall after the Romans left, serving as a warning about how bad choices can bring a nation to its knees. Gildas talks about the problems of the Britons, focusing on how turning away from what's right and just, leads to difficult times for everyone. The story covers the history of Britain, starting with the Romans taking over, then rebellions, and finally, the arrival of the Saxons, who were first invited to help but then took over. Gildas stresses that bad behavior and ignoring divine guidance have serious consequences, pointing out the internal moral problems of the Britons, which made their situation even worse. He uses the story to urgently encourage the people of Britain to change their ways and start fresh to avoid complete ruin after Britain faces such harsh disasters.

About the Author

Gildas β€” also known as Gildas Badonicus, Gildas fab Caw and Gildas Sapiens β€” was a 6th-century British monk best known for his scathing religious polemic De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae, which recounts the history of the Britons before and during the coming of the Saxons. He is one of the best-documented figures of the Christian church in the British Isles during the sub-Roman period, and was renowned for his Biblical knowledge and literary style. In his later life, he emigrated to Brittany, where he founded a monastery known as Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys.
