Summary

"The Sorceress: A Drama in Five Acts" by Victorien Sardou is a play set in 16th-century Spain that grapples with how love, prejudice, and religious persecution affect the lives of the characters after the Reconquista. The play tells the story of Zoraya, a Moorish woman wrongly accused of witchcraft, and Don Enrique, a Castilian officer. The tensions between Christians and Moors, including the accusations of witchcraft, are at the heart of the drama. The play kicks off with the arrest of local peasants, accused of stealing the body of Kalem, a young Moor stoned to death for his inappropriate love affair with a Christian girl. Don Enrique questions these peasants, showcasing his authority, compassion, and the play introduces the love that forms between Enrique and Zoraya.

About the Author

Victorien Sardou was a French dramatist. He is best remembered today for his development, along with EugĂšne Scribe, of the well-made play. He also wrote several plays that were made into popular 19th-century operas such as La Tosca (1887) on which Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca (1900) is based, and FĂ©dora (1882) and Madame Sans-GĂȘne (1893) that provided the subjects for the lyrical dramas Fedora (1898) and Madame Sans-GĂȘne (1915) by Umberto Giordano. His play Gismonda, from 1894, was also adapted into an opera of the same name by Henry FĂ©vrier.
