Summary

"Complete Plays of John Galsworthy" by John Galsworthy is a compilation of theatrical pieces from the dawn of the 1900s, demonstrating acute insights into society and the difficulties people face in England at the time. From the well-to-do Barthwicks to the hard-up Joneses, the plays tackle social class divides, right versus wrong, and what happens because of what people do. "The Silver Box" begins the collection, highlighting Jack Barthwick, a rich politician's son, and the problems that follow his night out. Waking up with a stolen purse and no idea how he got it, Jack's carelessness triggers a crisis for his family. At the same time, Mrs. Jones, a cleaning lady struggling with her husband's drinking and joblessness, gets mixed up in the mess when her husband says he was involved in the crime. The story reveals the problematic relationships between different social classes and the weight of responsibility, featuring characters stuck within their roles.
