"Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is a story from the 1800s about a scientist named Victor Frankenstein, who tries to overcome death by creating a living being from old, lifeless body parts. The book looks at the concepts of wanting to be important, seeking knowledge, being alone, and being in charge of your actions. The book begins with Robert Walton going to the North Pole; he finds Victor Frankenstein sick and weak. Robert tells his sister about the trip and how he wishes he had a friend. Victor then gets better and tells Robert about how his scientific research went wrong and about the terrible monster he made. The beginning of the book creates an atmosphere of dread, discussing the negative aspects of ambition and the mind of a person, hinting at a narrative filled with terror and moral questions.

About the Author

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which is considered an early example of science fiction. She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother was the philosopher and women's rights advocate Mary Wollstonecraft.
