"Rhoda of the Underground" by Florence Finch Kelly is a story set in a time when America was divided over slavery. It follows Rhoda Ware, a young woman who starts to question what's right and wrong as the country heads towards the Civil War. At first, the book shows Rhoda living a normal life with her family, especially her sister Charlotte, but things get complicated when she learns about the Underground Railroad, a secret network helping slaves escape to freedom. Her dad is against slavery, but she is also in love with Jefferson Delavan, who owns slaves. When Rhoda meets a slave running away, she has to decide what she believes in, and this decision changes her life as she decides the kind of person she wants to be.
