"A Daughter of the Union" by Lucy Foster Madison is a story from the time of the Civil War, which tells of a girl named Jeanne Vance, who is loyal to her country and wants to help with the war. Even though some people think that she is limited because she is a girl, she wants not only to make her mark but to also help the Union cause. The story is about bravery, giving up things for others, and what women were able to do during the war. At the start, Jeanne and her friends feel like they can't do much to actually help with the war, so they decide to raise money for the Union soldiers. Jeanne takes charge and shows how determined she is. They do well selling things they made, and a boy donates his crutches, which inspires Jeanne even more. This pushes Jeanne to go on a mission that could really help the Union, showing how brave and selfless she is.
