Summary

"The Major" by Ralph Connor is a story that follows Lawrence Gwynne, a young boy who struggles with what it means to be brave and true to himself. Set in a small village during the early 1900s, Lawrence faces questions about courage and family honor because his mother is a Quaker, and some people think that means she is a coward. He has many adventures as he grows up and feels pressure from the people around him. One day, he skips school with his friends and runs into a bully who calls him a coward because of his mom, which makes Lawrence wonder about who he is and what he believes in; the story shows how Lawrence deals with these conflicts as he tries to become brave and accept himself, even if it means going against what others think.
