Summary

"Riya's Foundling" by Algis Budrys is a story that looks at what it means to connect with others and who we are through the unusual friendship between a boy, Phildee, and an intelligent, cow-like creature named Riya. The story makes you wonder about what makes someone a mother and how we understand beings that are different from us. We see Phildee playing make-believe, then we follow Riya as she searches for a partner among wild animals. When they finally meet, Riya feels like she needs to care for Phildee, who is both puzzled and interested by her. As they spend time together, Riya discovers the happiness of being a caregiver, and Phildee learns about who he is in a strange world. Their special bond teaches them about love, where they belong, and the incredible connections that can form between two very different beings.
