Summary

"The Barbarians" by Algis Budrys is a science fiction novel set in a post-apocalyptic America, where remnants of the old world clash with a new barbarism amid armored warfare. The story follows Giulion Geoffrey, a young nobleman, after a devastating battle against the invading barbarian hordes led by the notorious Hodd Savage. Following a painful betrayal by a fellow nobleman, Geoffrey finds himself unexpectedly dependent on The Barbarian and embarks on a dangerous quest to reclaim his birthright. Along the way, he confronts the brutal realities of power and an unlikely alliance with The Barbarian and a woman named Myka. The novel seems to explore themes of betrayal, survival, and the complicated bonds of human relationships that arise in a shattered civilization.
