"Firegod" by William Scarff is a science fiction story that dives into the dangers of power and illusion. The book is about D'hai Merssu, who becomes the Emperor of All the Suns after leading a revolution. To deal with a revolt by Earthmen, Merssu decides he wants to be a god on a less advanced planet. He journeys through hyperspace, hoping to both bring civilization to a new world and get the people there to worship him. But, when he returns, his plan falls apart because the people don't see him as a god. Despite all his ambition, the people reject and kill him, leaving behind a legacy of worship for someone they don't even know. Merssu's story shows the irony of trying to become a god through trickery.
