Summary

"At Fault" by Kate Chopin is a story that takes place in 1800's Louisiana. The book follows Thérèse Lafirme, a Creole widow, as she manages her plantation, Place-du-Bois, after her husband's death. At the start, Thérèse is dealing with grief and struggling to keep the estate running smoothly which leads to the community doubting her abilities. But, with the encouragement of Uncle Hiram, she begins to take control and finds new strength in her role. The story also includes David Hosmer, a man with a timber contract that could change Thérèse's life, hinting at a possible romance and business deal. The book explores themes of love, duty, and facing hard choices in a time of social expectations.

About the Author

Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and novels based in Louisiana. She is considered by scholars to have been a forerunner of American 20th-century feminist authors of Southern or Catholic background, such as Zelda Fitzgerald, and she is among the most frequently read and recognized writers of Louisiana Creole heritage. She is best known today for her 1899 novel The Awakening.
