"Charmides" by Plato is a philosophical back-and-forth from the 4th century BC that asks big questions about what it means to have temperance, or be moderate. The story kicks off with Socrates, back from fighting in the military, hanging out with his buddies at a training ground. Everyone’s buzzing about a good-looking young guy named Charmides and wondering if he's as virtuous as he is handsome. Socrates steps in, and the two of them start trying to pin down exactly what temperance is all about. They toss around ideas like being calm, knowing your limits, and having a handle on yourself, but they quickly find out that defining virtues isn’t as easy as it sounds, which makes you think about the complications of temperance.
