Summary

"Peggy Owen and Liberty" by Lucy Foster Madison is a story set during the Revolutionary War, following Peggy Owen, a Quaker girl, as she grapples with her family's peaceful beliefs amidst a war for independence. Peggy's world is turned upside down when her cousin Clifford, having escaped a British prison, seeks refuge in her home. During a stormy night, with friends gathered and a celebration in progress, British officers arrive searching for the escapee, threatening Clifford and forcing Peggy to find a way to protect him without betraying everything she holds dear. Through tense moments and difficult decisions, Peggy’s devotion to both her family and her nation is tested as she tries to balance her beliefs with the urgent need to help her cousin.
