Summary

"Nuova; or, The New Bee" by Vernon L. Kellogg is a story about a young bee named Nuova and her transformation from dependence to a worker's life. The tale introduces Nuova as she wakes up from her cell to a busy hive. Full of fantasy mixed with the real world it highlights being an individual, doing your duty, and the push and pull of what you want versus what's expected of you in the bee community. Nuova feels restless and wants more than the hive can offer. She wants to live outside the hive as she is different from her friends, which creates a struggle of rules versus independence.

About the Author

Vernon Lyman Kellogg was an American entomologist, evolutionary biologist, and science administrator. A major contribution was his study of bird lice and their hosts. He established the Department of Zoology at Stanford University in 1894, and served as the first permanent secretary of the National Research Council in Washington, D.C.
