"The House of a Thousand Candles" by Meredith Nicholson is a story set in the early 1900s that follows John Glenarm after he gets word of his grandfather's passing and a strange request in the will -- in order to inherit a fortune, he needs to live for a year in Glenarm House, which isn't even finished. The book looks at duty, what people leave behind, and how families can be complicated, as John has to deal with his history while getting used to his new life. When John gets to the house, he feels all sorts of things and faces strange events, like someone trying to hurt him, and as he talks to the mysterious caretaker, Bates, he starts to think that there are secrets hidden around his inheritance.
