Summary

"The West Indies and the Spanish Main" by Anthony Trollope is a 19th-century travelogue where the author recounts his adventures and misadventures across various Caribbean islands, such as Jamaica and Cuba, painting a picture of their societies, environments, and the spirit of the times. Trollope combines his personal encounters with historical data, vividly portraying the everyday life in this part of the world while sharing his thoughts and feelings experienced along the way. Opening with the author on a ship, stuck in place, suffering in the heat, and hungry, he comically regrets his decision to travel to Cien Fuegos via this route. Through stories of the ship's crew and his own troubles, Trollope uses funny, honest observations about people to prepare the reader for his exploration of the West Indies.
