Summary

"The Life of Thomas Paine, Vol. 2" by Moncure Daniel Conway is a 19th-century biography that explores Thomas Paine's journey through the French Revolution, revealing his commitment to liberty and moral governance amidst political turmoil. Beginning in 1793, the narrative follows Paine as he navigates the complexities of revolutionary France, advocating for justice and human rights, even for King Louis XVI, during the king's trial. Despite facing condemnation in Britain for his radical views, Paine persists in championing his ideals, proposing alternatives to execution and advocating for a reformed role for the monarchy. His efforts, however, are met with resistance from radical factions, underscoring the conflict between Paine's vision of equality and the brutal realities of the Revolution, framing his ongoing fight for liberty against a backdrop of violence and political upheaval.

About the Author

Moncure Daniel Conway was an American abolitionist minister and radical writer. At various times Methodist, Unitarian, and a Freethinker, he descended from patriotic and patrician families of Virginia and Maryland but spent most of the final four decades of his life abroad in England and France, where he wrote biographies of Edmund Randolph, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Thomas Paine and his own autobiography. He led freethinkers in London's South Place Chapel, now Conway Hall.
