Summary

"Margaret Montfort" by Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards is a story set in the late 1800s about Margaret Montfort and how she copes with daily life after her Aunt Faith dies, finding ways to run the family home, Fernley, while struggling with the changing expectations brought on by her cousin Sophronia, who comes to stay and stirs up trouble. Initially, Margaret is shown fondly remembering Aunt Faith with her uncle, Mr. Montfort, as she manages her sadness while trying to keep her uncle’s spirits high. The story follows Margaret as she cares for her home and garden. As cousin Sophronia interferes more and more, Margaret is challenged to take charge, protect her family’s history, manage her relationships with the house staff, and, most of all, not lose who she is.
