Summary

"Verses" by Edith Wharton is a compilation of poems from the late 1800s that explores love, nature, and what it means to be human. These poems, which came before Wharton's well-known famous novels, uses pretty language to capture moments of beauty and thinking, showing respect for both the world around us and the feelings inside us. The collection includes different types of poems, such as sonnets and ballads that look at topics like the seasons, the confusing parts of love, and thoughts about life and death. In poems like "Le Viol d’Amour" and "Spring Song," Wharton shares the happiness and mystery of love and nature, while in poems like "The Last Token" and "June and December," she thinks about how quickly life passes by and the sad but sweet memories of being young. This book demonstrates Wharton's skillful way with words and her ability to create deep feelings through her thoughts on personal and universal ideas.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
