Summary

"Kissing the Rod: A Novel" by Edmund Yates is a compelling story focused on a man named Robert Streightley, who faces serious problems because of his mistakes and a difficult marriage to Katharine Guyon. The book looks at ideas like feeling guilty, being sad, and wanting to be forgiven as Robert struggles with the results of what he's done. At the beginning, Robert is very upset after his father-in-law, Mr. Guyon, dies and he finds out that Katharine has left him. He feels guilty because their relationship started with lies. He's sad that Katharine is gone, and he has to deal with his failing business and broken life, setting up a story that takes a close look at the characters' feelings and how their relationships led them to where they are now.
