Summary

"A Righted Wrong: A Novel. Volume 3 (of 3)" by Edmund Yates is a story set in the late 1800s built around connections, social class, and the past with a grand estate called the Deane as its backdrop. The story begins with a celebration for Gertrude Baldwin, but there is an older companion named Mr. Dugdale who reflects on forgotten moments, ties to the deceased Mrs. Baldwin, and other parts of the family’s story. The contrast between the joy surrounding Gertrude’s party and Dugdale’s more serious perspective, as he remembers past secrets connected to the estate, drives the plot. The memory of Gertrude’s mother, Margaret, weighs heavily on his thoughts showing ideas of loss. As the family is highlighted through the events that unfold, there are growing tensions of social expectations of the relationships of those around them. The introduction of another companion, Robert Meredith, brings emotions of admiration and conflict to those around him.
