Summary

"Inkle and Yarico: An opera, in three acts" by George Colman is a story set in colonial America and Barbados, where love and difficult moral decisions come together in the lives of Inkle, that young trader, and Yarico, the native woman who saves him from danger. The story unfolds in the treacherous wilderness, where Inkle's main focus is money, even when it comes to his own safety, and Trudge, his servant, is afraid of what might happen. When Inkle meets Yarico, he falls for her beauty and strength, which begins their journey, and despite being engaged to to Narcissa, the governor's daughter, Inkle feels conflicted as he feels real affection for Yarico. But the relationship takes a turn as it explores loyalty and betrayal, as Inkle struggles with his plans and whether or not he is willing to leave Yarico behind for a better future.

About the Author

George Colman, known as "the Younger", was an English dramatist and miscellaneous writer. He was the son of George Colman the Elder.
