Summary

"Welcome, Martians!" by S. A. Lombino is a captivating science fiction story about Cal Manners and Dave Langley, the first humans to set foot on Mars, whose mission becomes a mind-bending exploration of mistaken identity and cultural echoes. Upon landing, instead of a barren wasteland, they are met with a lively Martian celebration, complete with a welcoming crowd led by Mayor Panley who believes the terrestrial explorers are famous astronauts, Bobby Galus and Gary Dale who are returning from a long space journey. Despite the astronaut's urgent insistence that they are not Galus and Dale, the Martians continue their hero's welcome, causing Cal and Dave to wrestle with the bizarre realization that Mars might have developed along strikingly similar lines as Earth, culminating in a twist that causes the reader to ponder questions of identity and the possibility of parallel worlds.
