Summary

"The Little Colonel" by Annie Fellows Johnston is a heartwarming story about a lively young lady named Lloyd, also known as the Little Colonel, set in beautiful Kentucky. The story looks at family connections, different types of relationships, and how a child's pure heart can affect those around them. The main part of the story is about the little girl's interactions with her serious grandfather, Colonel Lloyd, and her mother, Elizabeth. These interactions reveal a strained relationship that makes the story deeper. Lloyd is full of energy and curiosity as she wanders around her grandfather's estate, Locust. She meets him with a happy attitude, even though he seems harsh, and accidentally reminds him of his son who died in the war. Other people, like her faithful dog, Fritz, and her caring caretaker, Mom Beck, bring warmth to her adventures. The first parts of the story suggest problems in her family, especially between her mother and grandfather that reveals a past that influences how they live now. The start sets the scene for a detailed exploration of innocence, love, and making peace as the story continues.
