Summary

"Light Science for Leisure Hours" by Richard A. Proctor is a collection of understandable essays that explains scientific topics and natural events in a way that’s easy for anyone to grasp. The author starts by describing the aurora, a beautiful and strange display of light in the sky, and how it connects to the Earth’s magnetism. He explains that people noticed a long time ago that when the aurora appears, compass needles act strangely, even when the aurora is far away. Proctor uses this connection to hint at a bigger relationship between the aurora, magnetic forces, and what's happening on the sun, encouraging readers to think about the wider scientific meanings of these impressive natural shows.

About the Author

Richard Anthony Proctor FRAS was an English astronomer. He is best remembered for having produced one of the earliest maps of Mars in 1867 from 27 drawings by the English observer William Rutter Dawes. His map was later superseded by those of Giovanni Schiaparelli and Eugène Antoniadi and his nomenclature was dropped.
