Equality

"EQUALITY" by Edward Bellamy is a thought-provoking novel set in a technologically advanced society where everyone is economically equal. The story begins with Julian West, a rich man from 1887, waking up in the year 2000 after sleeping for over a century to find a world drastically different from his own. In this futuristic society, money as he knew it has been abolished, and the concept of work has been reorganized around national service, ensuring that every citizen shares in the societal wealth and prosperity. Guided by Dr. Leete and his daughter, Julian struggles at first to understand and accept this utopian society, questioning how it could possibly function without the familiar motivators of greed and competition, and how the disparities of wealth and opportunity that plagued Julian’s past have been eliminated. Through Julian's journey of discovery of this transformed world, the book questions the inequalities of the 19th century world and imagines a world organized around equality.
