Summary

"Women in Love" by D. H. Lawrence is a story set in the early 1900s that follows the Brangwen sisters, Ursula and Gudrun, as they try to find their way in life, love, and society. The book looks at how these sisters have different ideas about love, what they want, and what life is all about. It shows the problems women faced when they wanted to be independent in a world run by men. Early on, the book shows the sisters talking quietly about marriage and what people expect from them. Ursula is calm, but Gudrun is more fiery and realistic. Their talk shows their worries and dreams as they struggle with what's expected of them. As the sisters walk through their everyday surroundings the reader sees a big difference between what they feel inside and the tough realities of their working-class lives which primes the reader to examine their identies and relationships.

About the Author

David Herbert Lawrence was an English novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, literary critic, travel writer, essayist, and painter. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Four of his most famous novels — Sons and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915), Women in Love (1920), and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928)— were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of romance, sexuality and use of explicit language.
