"Shanty the Blacksmith; a Tale of Other Times" by Mary Martha Sherwood is a story set long ago on the border between England and Scotland, where a young landowner named Mr. Dymock tries to rebuild his family's wealth, so he asks Shanty, a blacksmith, to create a new type of plough, while at the same time he deals with the problems of his home life. The story begins by introducing us to Mr. Dymock’s run-down tower and the unusual people who live there, including Mrs. Margaret, his housekeeper; as Mr. Dymock hopes to make things better through Shanty's work, changes happen at home, especially when a strange young person and a beggar woman with her children arrive and all these new characters and relationships create a tangled web of riddles, pointing toward a deeper mystery about the young Tamar as well as who she is and where she belongs.
