Summary

"The Wishing Cap" by Mary Martha Sherwood is a story set in the early 1800s that teaches kids about faith and what makes people truly happy. A rich woman looks after five kids, and she brings them a "wishing cap" that’s supposed to make their dreams come true. All the children excitedly wish for toys and dolls, except for Charles, who is an orphan. Charles doesn’t want toys; all he wants are God's blessings, which his parents taught him were most important before they died. The other kids get their wishes, but their new toys cause them to fight and make them sad, showing them that things don’t bring happiness. Charles gets very sick but shows everyone how comforting God's love can be before he passes away. This changes the rich woman’s heart, teaching her and the other kids that it's better to seek blessings than material possessions.

About the Author

Mary Martha Sherwood was a nineteenth-century English children's writer. Of her more than four hundred works, the best known include The History of Little Henry and his Bearer (1814) and the two series The History of Henry Milner (1822–1837) and The History of the Fairchild Family (1818–1847). Her evangelicalism permeated her early writings, but later works cover common Victorian themes such as domesticity.
