Summary

"Mother" by Maksim Gorky is set in the late 1800s amidst Russia's societal and political problems, and it tells the tale of a working family grappling with tough factory jobs and difficult family situations. The story mainly focues on Pelagueya Vlasova, the mother, and it shows her struggles with her mean husband, Michael, and how her son, Pavel, slowly becomes aware of the workers' problems. At the start, the book shows a depressing world where the factory controls everything, and the workers are worn out and mistreated. Alcohol abuse, violence at home, and the never-ending cycle of being poor are some of the issues the story shows. Michael is portrayed as a cruel and harsh man, but his son, Pavel, hints at a changing to push back against this darkness, leading the reader to themes of fighting back, hope, and finding what is fair.
