Summary

"H. R." by Edwin Lefevre is a comical story set in the early 1900s, about a bank clerk named Hendrik Rutgers who dreams of escaping his boring job and finding real purpose in life; his journey starts when he gets fed up with the banking world. Hendrik wants more than just a regular job and thinks about what freedom really means to him. After arguing with his boss about money, Hendrik decides he's had enough of the capitalist system, and quits. He sees this as a great escape. Inspired by anger and the feeling of springtime, he makes a surprising move: he starts a union for sandwich-board carriers, seeing them as victims of a broken society, with his energy and determination foreshadow a bigger message about class differences and chasing dreams in a fast-changing America.
