"Vengeance on Mars!" by D.B. Lewis is a science fiction story that throws the reader into a battle of morality on the harsh landscape of Mars. The story tells of Hale's mission confronting Randy; his former friend turned looter, who committed a grave crime by killing a guardian at a Martian water temple. Caldwell finds himself torn, struggling with his loyalty to Randy, but understanding the responsibility of protecting the colony from the growing danger that Randy brings. Hale hopes is that he can reach out to Randy and tries to appeal to the friendship that they used to have, but old issues get brought to light which makes things worse. Hale watches as his friend falls into darkness and transforms. As a result, Hale must deal with the high price of treachery on unforgiving Mars.
