Summary

"The Masquerader" by Katherine Cecil Thurston is a story set in London at the beginning of the 1900's. The plot is about John Chilcote, a politician battling drug addiction and all the stress that comes with the job. One night, during a thick fog, he meets John Loder, a man who looks exactly like him, which kicks off the main idea of the book: how people act versus who they really are. We see Chilcote dealing with his problems and meeting the mysterious stranger intensifies his feelings of himself. They talk about ambition and failure, especially when it comes to someone called Lexington. This meeting leads to Chilcote making a desperate offer to Loder, changing everything that follows.
